Birds of Paradise

Native to the islands of New Guinea, Moluccas, and in North Eastern Australia these are the most ornate and dramatic group of birds on earth. These elaborately coloured birds, relatives of the Bower birds, have featured strongly in the mythologies, traditions, cultures and ceremonies of their islands human counterparts for many thousands of years. Their exotic dancing in leks (groups of 5-20 birds in one tree) to attract a mate has inspired many island cultures over the centuries to perform their own ritual courtship dances, dressed in Bird of Paradise feather costumes.

Known to the Molucca's islanders as "bolong divata" (" Birds of the Gods"), they were believed to have no feet, and were reputed to fly around in heaven with the Gods drinking dew until they died and fell to earth. As "Birds of the Gods" they were worshipped by islanders who believed that good luck, prosperity and beauty as well as a place reserved in heaven alongside the Gods would be bestowed upon those who worshipped them.

It is known that over 2000 years ago they were highly valued and much sought after in Asia. They did not feature in the Western world until the 16th Century when the explorer, Magellen, was gifted some of the birds' skins and returned with them on his ship ,Victoria. Excessive trade in their bright, colourful plumage for the 17th and 18th Centurys' millinary industry led to the near extinction of some of the 42 different species. Thanks to protection bodies and governments they are now recovering.

At Jangles, we have used centuries old skills and techniques to lovingly craft these beautiful birds in glass for your own lucky Bird of Paradise, to you luck, prosperity, good looks and, hopefully, your own place in heaven with the Gods.
